The display case at Seebahnstrasse 85 presents contemporary works by Swiss and international artists to a wider audience. The exhibitions are curated in close collaboration with the artists. The public space is enlivened with contemporary art created or selected specifically for this urban location.
The display case is located in the facade of a striking 1950s office tower, at the intersection of Birmensdorferstrasse and Seebahnstrasse, opposite Wiedikon train station. The exhibition space is accessible around the clock and is noticed by many passersby every day.
Françoise Bassand
is a Swiss artist and curator with many years of experience in both artistic and curatorial practice. All the exhibition projects she has co-initiated and actively participated in have been independently managed and realized in collaboration with non-profit organizations for contemporary visual arts and independent, artist-run spaces in Switzerland, Europe, and North America.
"In times of global digital networking, what matters less is geographical or cultural origin, but rather the thematic engagement with contemporary issues and their representation in artistic work."
History:
From 1997 to 2001, Françoise Bassand and Martin Furler pioneered the independent art space "celeste & eliot kunstsalon" at Ankerstrasse 11 in Zurich. From 1998 to 2001, they operated sixteen display cases – "bonustrack" – at Müllerstrasse 71 in Zurich, which served as additional exhibition space in the public sphere. All exhibitions are listed here
. In 2023, both exhibition venues were reopened, with the display case at Seebahnstrasse 85 in Zurich – curated by Françoise Bassand – and an apartment on the ground floor of Güterstrasse 319 in Basel – curated by Martin Furler Bassand.
About this work:
Dawn captures the fragile stillness and subtle vitality of life in the moments around daybreak.
It is a liminal time, when light and shadow, life and death, quietly intersect.
At times, I feel a sense of unease toward the unknown; yet at the same time, it feels as though this very hour is when something invisible is watching over us.
